Birth & Death
Born: c.1809–1810, Weymouth, Dorset, England [1851 & 1861 censuses]
Identified from his son Samuel's 1851 census entry (St Philips, Bristol), which names the parents Samuel & Jane Jolliffe and the children's set — Session 67.Confirmed
Session 69 — occupation & birthplace. The 1851 St Philips census records him as head, aged 41, a BLACKSMITH, born Dorset; the 1861 census pins the birthplace to Weymouth, Dorset (b. ~1809). So the Jolliffe trade line runs blacksmith (Samuel Sr) → shoemaker (his son Samuel). The 1851 household: Samuel 41, Jane 37, and children Thomas (17), Jane (15), Samuel (10 — our line), Elizabeth (8), George (4), Mary (1). Earlier note: the 1851 census gives his birthplace as Dorset, c.1810 (Jane's as Bristol, c.1814). Bristol St Philip & Jacob christenings name their children — an earlier Samuel (chr. 16 Sep 1838) before our Samuel (chr. 28 Mar 1841), plus George Robert, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Thomas and Jane. The couple's marriage was found (Session 69, on a wider search): Samuel Jolliffe × Jane Gorton, 3 February 1833, St James' Priory Church, Bristol — giving Jane's maiden surname Gorton. See [Jane Jolliffe](JOL-010.md).Confirmed
