Samuel Joliffe was a shoemaker, born at Bristol St Philips about 1841 (age 40, head of household, in the 1881 census) Confirmed. He married Emma Ann Woolley in 1872 and died in 1891, leaving Emma a widow with young children Confirmed. Of their children only Caroline Emma (1873), Frederick William (1885) and the youngest, Edith (~1891) (our line), survived to adulthood; Priscilla Maurice (1883–1888) and Mary Ann Jane (1887) died in childhood, and the family-chart 'John (1876)' appears in NO census and is probably spurious Confirmed. The family is indexed under the double-L spelling 'Jolliffe'.
